Electronic Studio Resources I is an introduction to the computer music studio, designed for people with some academic background in music composition. We explore the widely varied sonic possibilities electronic media offer for composers, by means of technical instruction, encounters with representative contemporary pieces and the history of electroacoustic music, and two creative projects. We present in a public concert the first of these projects, a 4-5 minute surround-sound fixed-media composition. The second project is an experimental composition integrating physical and virtual modular synthesizers into your electronic music practice. Technical topics include acoustics, the use of microphones and mixers, digital audio theory, non-linear recording and editing, MIDI sequencing, sampling, and classic analog synthesis concepts.
There is one group class on Tuesdays (11:10 am – 12:25 pm). Tutorial sessions of 3 people meet during 50-minute sessions that we schedule during the first group meeting. We offer this course for 3 credit hours every fall semester.
